Hotel Poseidonion

“Oh, that’s very expensive”, I said when I called to
get a room at the Hotel Poseidonion.

“We are not tourists, we live on Hydra, that’s just next
door.”

Probably there wasn’t a tourist price but at least I’d
given it a try.

My wife and I had talked about staying at the famous
hotel and when we heard it was soon going to be
modernized, we decided to go there before it all was
changed.

“We are not tourists, we are travelers”, I said using a
favorite quote from Paul Bowles.

The writer John Fowles stayed in this hotel in 1950
when he wrote “The Magus”, all inspired by Spetses
and his job at the boarding school.

“OK, maybe this will be better for you”, the woman at
the hotel said, giving me a lower price.

I told my young son that when he grows up he will
remember his stay at Hotel Poseidonion, but now
he’s more excited over how my bargaining saved us
twenty Euros.
