The Lazaros Koundouriotis Mansion |
The museum is
a wonderful mansion overlooking the
harbor, full of beautiful artifacts,
clothes and furniture.
It was donated to the Hydra Island by the Koundouriotis
family and on the
bottom floor there is an art exhibition
with paintings by Byzantios, the man
who was the head of
the Art School here on Hydra for many years.
Your son can
go in free, the sweet lady at the counter said
when I asked about the entrance
fees. And if you are
students you can go in free as well. But maybe you’re
teachers? Or if you have more than four children all the
family can go in free?
You are not retired are you? she
said.
No,
unfortunately we have to pay for two adults I said and
smiled. But we’re not
tourists, we have a house here, I said
in the same stupid manner as when I pay
for a frappé in
the port, so they don’t charge me a jacked up tourist price.
But of course
this was a museum, not a café.
Oh, you have a
house here then you all go in free; all
people from the island have free entry,
she said and tore
off three tickets for us.
I am proud of
this museum and it’s just five minutes from
our house and I always tell people
to go there and I really
tried to pay an entrance.
